Gibson J-160E – John Lennon ($2.41 million)
The Gibson J-160E guitar used by Lennon to write early Beatles songs “She Loves You” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” sold for $2.41 million in 2015, and was the most expensive at the time. In 1962, Beatles manager Brian Epstein purchased two J-160E guitars from the Rushworth shop in Liverpool, one for Lennon and one for George Harrison, on credit. The purchase was made after Abbey Road Studios staff complained about the low quality of the group’s instruments and the affordable prices.
The J-160E model of the 70s was generally more affordable, although there were significant differences in construction compared to the 50s and 60s models. In the ’90s, Gibson released a new version of the J-160E that was closer to its original construction in the ’60s. Additionally, a variety of models have been released as a special tribute to John Lennon, such as the J-160E John Lennon, 70th Anniversary John Lennon J-160E Imagine, and 70th Anniversary Museum.
Black Stratocaster – David Gilmour ($3.975 million)
One of the more famous guitars owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd is the Black Strat, which he used consistently throughout his career. This guitar sold for $3.975 million at Christie’s auction in 2019, becoming one of the largest rock auctions in history. The auction raised a total of $21.5 million for the charitable foundation set up by Gilmour.
