King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Release New Singla Album “Hate Dancin”
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, a rock unit from Melbourne have shared their new single, Hate Dancin’. The song is the lead single from their 23rd studio album—and their third release in October—titled Changes.
With high productivity, this song follows the release of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 21st album, Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, and Lava on October 7, 2022. This material is a follow-up to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard from the album Laminated Denim which was released just five days later on October 12, 2022.
In a press statement about the song, vocalist Stu Mackenzie offered a concise one-sentence description: “I started writing songs about how I hate dancing, but then I realized I love dancing.”
Following Stu Mackenzie’s statement, the music video for the single Hate Dancin’ was also released along with the release of the new single. The music video depicts him and his bandmates dancing to a song in a warehouse.
Hate Dancin’s music video was directed by John Angus Stewart, who worked on several video concerts and films for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard throughout their career.
Changes were released on October 28, 2022, and is a seven-song album. Fun fact, the first letter of each song title acrostically spells the titular word. The album was originally composed by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard in 2017 when they attempted to release five studio albums in a year. However, it shows, for the sake of the album Gumboot Soup which was released in December of that year.
“When the session is over, it feels like it’s never finished. It was like an idea we had in our heads, but we couldn’t achieve it. We just don’t know how to do what we want to do yet,” said Stu Mackenzie of this long-abandoned and almost forgotten album.
The project was later revisited and most of it was re-recorded. Now, it serves as the band’s fifth studio album of 2022!
Stu Mackenzie described the album as a ‘song cycle’. Stu Mackenzie added: “This isn’t necessarily our most complex record, but every piece and every sound you hear comes out a lot.”
In mid-October, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard also released a new album titled Laminated Denim. It will be the second of three albums that ultra-productive psych-rockers will share in October 2022.
The album was released on October 12, 2022, and consists of two tracks. The two songs are titled The Land Before Timeland and Hypertension. Both songs are exactly 15 minutes long. The album Laminated Denim serves as a spiritual successor to the previous album, Made In Timeland—whose title is an anagram of Laminated Denim—which was released physically in March this year before arriving digitally yesterday with Laminated Denim.
“Like the last album, this album was made from a long improvisation, but this time we are also working in a time constraint that continues to run. We use ticks and ticks to make policies [to] go in and out like skiers dancing down a slope,” explained King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard of the new album while sharing news of their new album’s appearance on Twitter.
Laminated Denim, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 22nd studio album, is the second in a trilogy of albums the band will release in October. While the previous album, the 21st and titled Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, and Lava, was released on October 7, 2022. The final album is October’s third album, Changes, released on October 28, 2022.
When Changes arrives at the end of October, it will be the ultra-productive band’s fifth album released this year. In addition to Made In Timeland, Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava, and Laminated Denim, the band also released their Omnium Gatherum double album in April, Superfriends!
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard also gave their strongest sign of productivity by announcing that they will be returning to Europe and the UK for a tour throughout March 2023.
The Melbourne-based Sextet is currently touring North America and will play in Toronto starting October 18, 2022, and heading to Montreal, Forest Hills, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. It comes after the band forced more than a dozen dates earlier this year so vocalist Stu Mackenzie, who has Crohn’s disease, was able to return home to Australia for “urgent treatment”.
