Slant vs Straight Cabinet on Guitar Amps?
Slant vs Straight Cabinet – Slightly different from the previous articles, this time we will not discuss the gear output of a particular brand. This time, we’re going to talk about a question (which some of you have probably asked me about) about the speaker cabinet on guitar amps. One of the questions that often arise when we want to use a speaker cabinet is; is it better the slant / angled / slanted or straight?
Apart from the many things that affect how our hearing captures sound, when we hear the sound of the speaker cabinet directly (without any intermediary mics, etc.) the sound of each form of the cabinet will feel different from one another. The sound of the slant cabinet will sound brighter than the sound of a straight cabinet. Likewise, the straight cabinet sound will sound more “full” with a clearer bottom and less sharp treble than the slant cabinet.
However, it is different when we use additional media such as a microphone which then comes out of the monitor speakers on the stage. Although in several forums, many think that the sound output of a straight cabinet is still better. However, in the opinion of the sound engineer for recording or stage, there is no significant difference between the two (provided there is no other difference apart from the shape), especially if we place the microphone as close to the speaker as possible.
