Roísín Murphy Releases A Melancholy Dance Floor Single Titled “You Knew”

Róisín Murphy, Irish singer and songwriter, released his new single “You Knew” taken from his Hit Parade album which is set to be released on September 8, 2023, through music label Ninja Tune. He also shared two remix versions of PAYFONE and Eli Escobar’s “You Knew” alongside the release of a video of his performance in the Boiler Room recorded in Paris earlier this year.

The song “You Knew” is the fourth song he released from the album Hit Parade which was produced by the legendary figure in the dance music scene, DJ Koze. In his new single, Róisín talks about unrequited love as well as existentialism, over DJ Koze’s synthesizer playing and effects loops.

Roísín Murphy - You Knew

“‘You Knew’ is the story of my life. I’m an open-book person, I’m not shy to speak up and I make my wishes clear. Several times I dare to love but not be loved back, and I’m proud of those moments. The word ‘You Knew’ sums it up, you can write those two words on my tombstone, but I will write ‘You Had a Chance!,” Róisín said in a press release.

PAYFONE showcases their signature electro-disco sound on their version of “You Knew” remix. Mr bass playing. Fingers and echoing string sections color the remix. A major figure in New York’s house and techno scene, Eli Escobar, chose to perform a punchy hat section with a hypnotic bassline over Róisín’s effect-packed vocals. The two remixes of “You Knew” are different, but both are ready to hit the dance floor.

“You Knew” was released after the single “Fader” whose music video was directed by Róisín and which was called “one of the best music videos of Róisín’s long career” by Promo News. With a black-and-white tone inspired by 90s hip-hop videos, the music video for “Fader” engages more than 150 residents of Róisín’s hometown of Arklow. Prior to “Fader”, Róisín had previously released “The Universe” and “CooCool” which promised listeners a variety of sounds on the album ‘Hit Parade’.
