Dogstar Band, Prepares New Material After 23 Years
Dogstar Band – Keanu Reeves’ grunge band Dogstar is now gearing up to release their first new music. Interestingly, this new music is being prepared after 23 years of absence of any new releases.
Previously the band released two albums, namely Our Little Visionary which was released in 1996, and the album Happy Ending which was released in 2000. However, the band’s continuity was halted in 2002.
On Dogstar Band, Keanu Reeves played bass, and interest in them grew as his acting career took off. The band reunited last summer, as confirmed on their newly created Instagram. Since then, the band has posted a number of behind-the-scenes photo and video updates of their time in the studio.
“Thank you all for the good comments. We are very happy to see such a response. Honestly, wasn’t expecting this. It makes us want to play even more,” the band wrote alongside a new promo photo.
“We’ll be releasing some new music this summer, followed by some shows. As soon as everything is known, we will inform everyone immediately. So much to do but rest assured, we are in it and have put together an amazing team helping us,” the caption continued.
In addition, the caption also states that they will also be making a music video to support their first song—after two decades. They can’t wait to share their new music with everyone. Dogstar Band is confident that this will be the most satisfying and meaningful collection of songs they have ever created.
They also expressed their gratitude as many people had been patiently waiting for their appearance. They declared: “We truly have the best, most loyal fans!”
Veteran actor Keanu Reeves co-founded Dogstar in 1991. The band went on to release two albums, tour with Bon Jovi, and open shows for David Bowie. Keanu Reeves handled bass and backing vocals for Dogstar, but his eventual rise to fame meant it was difficult for the actor to find time on the project.
The band broke up in 2002. Keanu Reeves later played in the spin-off group Becky with Dogstar drummer, co-founder, and actor, Robert Mailhouse. However, he left the band after a year. In a 2019 interview with GQ, Keanu Reeves shares fond memories of the time since Dogstar was mysteriously booked at the 1992 Milwaukee Metal Fest, alongside acts like Agnostic Front, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Deicide.
“We played a set at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. I think we played close to [New York hardcore punk legend] Murphy’s Law. Imagine that,” Reeves told GQ.
“So we played a Grateful Dead cover at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. We were like, ‘They hate us. What are we doing here? What can we do? Let’s do a Grateful Dead cover… They were like, ‘Fuck you suck!’. I have the biggest grin on my face.”
The origin of the Dogstar stems from a chance encounter between Robert Mailhouse and Keanu Reeves at the supermarket in 1991. At the time, Robert Mailhouse was wearing a Detroit Red Wings hockey sweater, and Keanu Reeves (an avid hockey fan and avid sports player) asked if Mailhouse needed a goalkeeper. By this time the two had struck up a friendship, they started jamming together and joined Gregg Miller as the original guitarist and lead singer in 1992.
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Keanu Reeves said that they started playing in the garage before finally starting to write songs. Keanu Reeves said that he had invited his band to play their songs, then went on tour.
The band originally called themselves Small Fecal Matter. Then the name BFS (Big Fucking Shit, or Big Fucking Sound) was chosen before choosing Dogstar after Mailhouse found the name in a book called Sexus, written by Henry Miller.
