Thrice Band Release New Album “The Illusion of Safety”

Thrice Band, a post-hardcore band based in Maryland is celebrating a milestone on its journey as a band. Some time ago, Thrice just celebrated the anniversary of their second album titled “The Illusion of Safety”, which is now 20 years old. Thrice also celebrated by giving something special to his fans.

The album “The Illusion of Safety” is not just a Thrice studio album, more than that this album is considered a crucial part of the explosion of the emo/post-hardcore genre in the 2000s era.

To celebrate this achievement, Thrice has re-released the album “The Illusion of Safety” with the addition of the bonus track “That Hideous Strength” onto an exclusive vinyl.

This reissue of their second album was not widely marketed, Thrice Band in particular only printed 500 exclusive vinyl copies.

Meanwhile, the release of this exclusive vinyl is a series of celebrations for the album “The Illusion of Safety”. Previously, Thrice had performed various shows to celebrate their album.

Their first show was at Furnace Fest on September 23, 2022, where they also performed the song That Hideous Strength which they played live for the first time in 18 years.

Aside from the album’s big single “Deadbolt,” they haven’t played most of these songs live in 10-15 years, and, according to Setlist.fm, they never actually played “A Living Dance Upon Dead Minds” live until the Furnace Fest show.

About the album The Illusion of Safety

The Illusion of Safety album was released on February 5, 2002, through Sub City Records. The album received an immediate positive response from music critics, some of whom praised the album’s mix of musical styles.

The album sold 4,202 copies during its first week of release, reaching the top 20 on the Billboard Independent and Heatseekers Albums charts.

Musically, the music of The Illusion of Safety is described as emo, melodic hardcore, and post-hardcore. Lollipop Magazine writer Tim Den says his “[s]omber melodic hardcore” has “Master of Puppets fingerprints everywhere”

Athom of Sputnikmusic said the album “perfectly blends loud screams and shrill guitar work with clean vocals and an addictive and very dense melody.”

In the creative process of making this album, bassist Eddie Breckenridge said the rest of the band was starting to expand their musical tastes. He said he was into jazz at the time, Dustiin Kensrue (vocalist) was listening to Michael Jackson, and guitarist Teppei Teranishi was exploring pop music.

When an interviewer asked about the recurring theme of death on the album, Kensrue said “the dark theme is used because you can sometimes get something to someone’s heart when you might not be able to get it to their brain.”

The album’s mix of loud music is evident in The Illusion of Safety’s opening single, Kill Me Quickly”, which begins with metal guitar chords, and shifts to emo during the verse section, before returning to metal.

In terms of sales and popularity, the album The Illusion of Safety was fairly successful as a post-hardcore album. As of July 2006, the album has sold 167,000 copies in the USA. Wolves at the Gate covered “Deadbolt” for their Back to School (2013) EP, while Red Jumpsuit Apparatus covered “Trust” for the Song That Saved My Life Volume 2 (2019) compilation.

Thrice Band who was on Hiatus is now Back

In its journey as a band since 1999, Thrice has also experienced ups and downs. One of them was when they decided to go on hiatus for three years from 2012 to 2015.

When Thrice Band reunited in 2016, Thrice immediately released an album titled To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere. This album was recorded as Thrice’s ninth studio album.

They still continued to exist after that and even re-released a new studio album in 2018 titled Palms. Most recently, Thrice released their 11th album in 2021 entitled Horizons/East.

Horizons/East is the second album released by Thrice Band under Epitaph Records. This collaboration between Thrice and Epitaph Records began in 2018.

In mid-2018, Thrice opened a new chapter with Epitaph Records with the release of the single The Gray. After successfully releasing their first single with Epitaph Records, Thrice immediately celebrated with a concert tour with The Bronx and Teenage Wrist.
